Overview
The use of minimally invasive medical procedures is growing rapidly due to the benefits offered patients as well as cost savings when compared to invasive alternatives such as surgery. The number of medical devices being offered in the market that facilitate such procedures is growing as well. Examples of such devices include indwelling sensors, diagnostic imaging systems, drug delivery systems, transcatheter valves. The use of minimally invasive devices can provide reduced pain or discomfort while typically providing more rapid diagnosis, improved therapy offering improved outcomes and shortened hospital stays.
Rafael Medical's intravascular platform, SPACE STATION®, is a fully retrievable support platform for the fixation of minimally invasive devices within the body on a permanent or temporary basis. The low profile SPACE STATION® facilitates operator and patient friendly, safe percutaneous implantation of devices such as:
Embolic filters |
Indwelling sensors |
Valves |
Endovascular grafts |
Arterial bands |
Technology & Advantages
Currently there are no retrievable intravascular platforms commercially available. Stents may be considered for use as a platform, however they are usually not retrievable and require large delivery systems when used in large caliber vessels.
For example, a stent with an expanded diameter of 25mm, used to support devices in large caliber vessels, can be crimped down along its axis to fit through a relatively large 4.4mm sheath. Companies seeking to use stents in order to support their miniaturized sensors, valves, etc. (which may be as small as 2mm) within large caliber vessels are therefore forced to introduce their devices into the vessel by way of large delivery systems which may limit their use.

Low Profile System
Rafael Medical's SPACE STATION® allows a large range of platforms (from 6mm to over 30mm in diameter), required for supporting miniturized devices in large caliber vessels, to be deployed by way of a 2mm delivery system. With SPACE STATION® what ultimately determines the size of the delivery system is the actual minimally invasive device being implanted - not its support platform.

Retreivability
The ability to easily reposition and retrieve the SPACE STATION® is of particular importance since it can facilitate the use of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic devices with a wider patient base, particularly in patients for which the implantation of permanent devices is not recommended.
Other major advantages of the SPACE STATION® include:
 |
Simple, non-tilt delivery which can facilitate implantation under ultrasound guidance. |
 |
Safe and stable fixation within the vessel. |
 |
Flexible, bi-directional delivery and retrieval by connecting to the platform's distal and proximal ends. |
 |
Modular, potential for supporting and combining a number of devices providing diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities on a single platform. |
|
The unique features and advantages of the SPACE STATION® have been demonstrated and tested as part of the company's SafeFlo® vena cava filter.
Caution: Federal (U.S.) Law restricts SPACE STATION® for investigational use only.
